An Expose-Lit Guide
Why enter?
Participating in competitions is one of the easiest ways to gain good exposure around dA. If you win a competition, you can get some amazing prizes such as points (which can be spent in the dA store), features (which will give you even more exposure after the contest has ended), subscriptions (which give you access to some great features of dA that are unavailable to non-premium members).
The purpose of a contest is to get as many people involved as possible, meaning that a great number of people will be seeing your work!
Quick Tips for Success!
Introduce yourself to the host--it will leave a very good impression, both for the contest and for building a relationship that will last as long as you are on dA!
Read the rules really carefully to give yourself the best chance--Be sure your entry follows every rule and that you haven't left out any details. If there's a word requirement, run your piece through a word processor. If a link to the competition is required in your comments, make sure you include one.
Have a look at the other entries--Contests are much more enjoyable when everyone supports one another. In this community, giving attention will get you attention, as well as support your fellow writers. That's what we're all about, here!
Go one step further and comment--By doing so, you will be putting your name out there, and people will see that you want to encourage people as much as you want their support. Always be courteous when commenting on another piece. Many writers who get positive feedback from another writer will return the favor.
A few hot competitions you should enter:
Easter Contest. Poetry or prose contest, in which you're invited to respond to a piece of music, art, or an inspiring quote. It's members only, but anyone can join the group. Prizes include features and poetry/song requests. The deadline is April 12th.
#Lit-Visual-Alliance's kick off contest asks you (as a writer) to create a literature piece (prose or poetry) based upon a visual artwork on dA. This new group aims to make the ties stronger between artists and writers. If you want exposure, where better to start than with dA's huge visual artist population? Top prize is 300 points, a feature and a one-shot. The deadline is April 25th.
Steampunk/futuristic. A prose competition for fans of the speculative. This competition is wide open, so you're in with a super chance of some exposure. Get yourself out there, you have until April 30th.
None of those tickle your fancy? Already entered the lot and now you want MOAR?
You can find more contests in a number of places:

It's been a week or so. I am still around. Go me.
one. life updates
(People's personal lives are my favourite thing about journals. Pls skip if that is not you.)
I am (a) no longer teaching (short answer: "I like teaching, I don't like being a teacher"), (b) not entirely true, I'm tutoring maths and English, and teaching creative writing to kids and teens some weekends, (c) I'm also doing temp bar work. Which would be fine if it weren't for people, (d) I'm also doing an MA in writing for young people starting September. Very much looking forward to meeting a load of weirdos like me and hanging out with them for a year. And writing, obvs. (
?
I keep trying to come back and I keep failing but I want to be part of dA again I miss it.
(Also, I'm totes under-employed now, so IT'S POSSIBLE?)
Swimming / Hammers
This term-time business is a lot of hassle and involves far more effort than I have the effort-muscles to put in.
Right now I am organising summer concerts, a zoo trip, finishing end of year reports, involved in various art week shenanigans and getting a pack of children prepared for sports day, I'm getting observed tomorrow, and that's relatively little in comparison to all those people putting in real effort-muscles. I'm mostly just swimming from day to day. Using doggy paddle. I'll get to where I need to be eventually, anyway.
(And that is? Summer holidays with brain still basically intact. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...)

Wildlife Rescue
We've been looking after some friends' felines while they've been travelling in New Zealand. They send us texts such as "sitting on a beach in the sunshine drinking beer. Our lives are so hard :(". Meanwhile we have become very attached to their cats.
Two days ago I was washing up and gazing out the kitchen window. The young ginger male, fittingly called Loki, was stalking through the overgrown lawn, thinking he was soooooo camouflaged.

Hi, admin of #Teenage-Writers here. Just though I'd let you know that the deadline of our contest has been extended until May 6 so if you could update the list, that would be great.
